The Cheese Truck at Trinity Kitchen, Leeds

If you're from Leeds and haven't heard of Trinity Kitchen, I suggest that you get yourself there pronto. Situated on the first floor of the Trinity Centre, it features seven permanent restaurants (Including Chip + Fish, Pho and Chicago Rib Shack), accompanied by five different street food vendors that are in residency at Trinity Kitchen for a month at a time. Every month, there are new trucks, stalls and vans brought up into the kitchen and therefore, there is always something new to try. It's a fantastic idea, and since it opened a few months ago I have visited several times and tried food from a few of the vendors. At the end of the April, I found out that one of the new vendors to be gracing Trinity Kitchen with their presence was The Cheese Truck, hailing from London town - and if you know me at all, you'll know that I was very excited about the prospect! Serving up a mouthwatering selection of grilled cheese sandwiches, along with macaroni cheese, cheesy chips and stilton brownies (Yes, you read that right!), I suggested that we go there when I met up with some of my favourite Leeds bloggers a few weeks ago. I also went again last weekend with Martin, as he had yet to sample the cheesy goodness for himself.

The menu was actually quite varied, more so than I expected, considering that the primary focus is of course, cheese. Whilst in Leeds, the guys behind the truck, Alex and Pierre, are making a point of using some local cheeses in their sandwiches and this pleases me no end. Picking something to eat was quite a challenge, as everything sounded delicious; there was nothing that I wouldn't have tried! On my first visit I had the Queso Chihuahua cheese, spicy chorizo and rocket sandwich, £6, washed down with a bottle of Camden Hells lager, £3. I was pleased to see that they offered beers right from the truck to drink with the food, as I really couldn't imagine a better combination. The second time I visited the truck, I decided to go for "Today's Special": Ribblesdale Yorkshire goats cheese, honey mustard and ham sandwich, £6, and a bottle of Meantime London Pale Ale, £3. Martin went for the chorizo sandwich that I had previously, and a bottle of the Meantime London Lager. As we went just before closing on the Sunday, the guy making our food asked if we would like some free macaroni cheese - erm, yes please! How could we turn that down?

Out of the two sandwiches I had, I preferred the latter - the goats cheese, honey mustard and ham. Both sandwiches are delicious and grilled to perfection, with thick, crunchy bread and hot, gooey cheese. The chorizo was very flavoursome, but not so much that it overpowered the Queso cheese. It was quite spicy overall, and the rocket really brought it all together nicely. However, whilst that one was very tasty, the honey mustard and ham one was out of this world. The combination of the cheese, mustard and meat was spot on and I could easily have eaten another portion - and that's saying something, as the portions are really quite generous! The grilled sandwiches are bigger than your usual offering, even when they are cut into two and all the better for it. As for the macaroni cheese... all I can say is, these guys know how to do it properly. Macaroni cheese for me has got to have a crusty topping, and our generous free portion came with just that. I'm not sure what cheese they use, but it was creamy and full of flavour. All in all, it was everything macaroni cheese should be - filling, satisfying and the ultimate comfort food.

I think that The Cheese Truck will be leaving Trinity Kitchen at the end of the month and heading back down south, which is a shame as they have been one of my favourite vendors to hit Trinity Kitchen so far! But before they do head home, I highly recommend that you give them a go. If you're a cheese fiend like I am, then I would say that you need to go! I would really like to see them come back up to Yorkshire again in the future, and find out what else they can create with other Yorkshire cheeses. They've created some winners so far, that's for sure! These guys really know their stuff, even though they haven't even been trading for a year yet, and offer some top-notch grub for a sensible price. Go check them out before it's too late - or, if you're in London, you can catch them at the Maltby Street Market every weekend!
