The majority of my make up collection is made up of eyeshadows, and palettes in particular so I was thrilled when I received these as part of the prize from Soap & Glory. I knew that Soap & Glory had some eyeshadows but I didn't know what shades they were or what they looked like, or read any reviews on them. So without further ado let's see what Lid Stuff have to offer!
Soap & Glory's range is made up of three palettes; Off the Wallflowers, Smokey Dokey and Whats Nude. The latter two are fairly safe options - everyone loves a good smokey eye, and nude colours are also loved by pretty much everyone and suit pretty much everyone too. However Off the Wallflowers was a pleasant surprise, as there are some colours thrown in there - not in your face colours, but ones that can add a little touch here and there. The palettes themselves are made out of a durable plastic, and the lid is clear so you can see what shades are inside. When I flipped the palette over to read the back it mentions that there is no "cheap spongy shadow brush" included, and this pleased me because those sponge brushes that are often included in cheaper eyeshadow palettes (MUA, I'm looking at you) are next to useless and go straight in the bin!
The pans are a very generous size and I can't see myself completely using them all up any time soon... even with the regular use that they're getting. As with most palettes these are ideal for travel as they are sturdy, durable and save you from have to carry lots of little pots of eyeshadow around! What I particularly loved about these though are two things - the first is the Soap & Glory logo embossed onto the top right eyeshadows - such a simple touch but it makes the palette feel so much more luxurious. The second was that each of the shades are named - I won't mention them all but Mudhoney (Whats Nude) and Dandy Plum (Off the Wallflowers) have to be two of the best eyeshadow names ever!
Onto the eyeshadows themselves, which is what you're all here for is it not? Soap & Glory have yet to let me down with their cosmetics range, and whilst these are not my favourite products from their range, they do have a fairly firm place in my make up collection. The problem that seems to befall most high street brands who produce eyeshadows are the matte shades... they are very difficult to get right and often fall short, and I'm afraid to say that Soap & Glory are no exception. There is only one matte shade per palette but even after several strokes with the brush they are poorly pigmented and a bit chalky, which was a bit of a disappointment.
Where these palettes come into their own though is with their shimmer shades, which thankfully make up the rest of each palette. The blacks in the Smokey Dokey palette are not quite as dark as I would like but the rest are well pigmented, creamy and blend easily making them a dream to apply. With a good primer (as all eyeshadows should have - the above swatches are without primer) these last a whole working day without creasing and little fading. The matte shadows do fade very quickly but then they barely show up at all, so it makes sense when you think about it. As mentioned before, the shades in the Off the Wallflowers palette are not eye popping but I think I like that about them... they offer a sheer wash of colour which makes them wearable for daytime. I only wish the lilac shade was a shimmer too!
Final verdict: These palettes almost hit the mark in terms of eyeshadow quality, but are let down by the matte shades - perhaps give them a miss next time Soap & Glory!
Lid Stuff can be found in Boots for £10 each.
