What I've been loving this week (#1)

May 06, 2014

I've been looking through the feedback that I've been receiving from my blog survey (If you haven't already filled it out, please, please, please do so - it will take less than five minutes!), and something that's cropped up a couple of times is that my "Week in Instagram" posts are generally not read by most people. I knew that this was happening anyway, as the page views barely make it past 20 per post, and it's a series that I've been thinking of stopping for a while. So, to replace it, I've decided to create a "What I've been loving this week" series every Sunday instead. I'm going to keep these posts non-beauty themed (As I believe I'll cover any beauty favourites of mine in my "monthly favourites") and show you what other things I've been enjoying every week. As you'll see below, these will range from food to music and everything in between. The posts will include pictures from my Instagram feed, as well as stock images - where appropriate - and other pictures I've taken. This first post is two days late, but from now on it will be going up every Sunday. Let me know what you think of this idea!

HTC One M8
This week saw the start of me using my new phone, and I am absolutely in love. I got it via an upgrade on 3 and actually ended up with a pretty good deal for it; 100 minutes, unlimited texts and unlimited internet for £31 per month, which isn't bad at all considering that this phone was released just over a month ago. The camera quality is just fantastic (As you should be able to tell from the Instagram images below), it's very fast and, with the curved gunmetal outer, is just gorgeous to look at too. I'm using Apex Launcher on it as I don't like the default HTC Sense, but it's adapted very well and it's a real pleasure to use.

Samuel Smith's Organic Cherry Beer
I'll warn you now, I'm sure that a lot of beer will end up in these posts! This one has a special place in my heart; it's the first Samuel Smith's beer that I ever had and is ultimately my favourite. Even if you really dislike beer, I urge anyone to give this a try as it really doesn't taste like beer at all. It's very, very fruity without being too sweet and is far too easy to drink! Because this is brewed in Tadcaster - a short hop down the road from me - this is nearly always very reasonably priced, in both Samuel Smith's pubs and ale shops across Yorkshire. There are other flavours available too, such as apricot and strawberry.

Miley Cyrus - "Jolene"
If you'd told me this time last week that I would have really enjoyed Miley Cyrus' cover of "Jolene", I would have laughed in your face. Despite having two of her most recent songs on my old phone (There's a genuine explanation for this), generally speaking I'm not a fan of her music. This cover, however, is simply amazing - she's got an incredible voice that rarely comes across in her more recent work. Martin posted it onto his Tumblr and I thought he'd gone mad at first... until I listened to it! It's one of the few covers in this world that has been done very, very well - hats off to Miley for this one, I'm suitably impressed.

Patisserie Valerie's Double Chocolate Cake
I met up with a few of my favourite Leeds bloggers this weekend (Which I really enjoyed by the way!), and after we'd eaten in Trinity Kitchen and wandered around town for a while, me and Grace decided to have some cake in Patisserie Valerie on Albion Street. Whilst the ice cream milkshake and the service was a disappointment, our experience was saved somewhat by the incredible slice of cake that was laid down in front of us. Me and Grace are self-confessed chocaholics and even we couldn't finish our slices - that's how big they were! It was a perfect mixture of mousse and sponge, and yes, that is a profiterole on top...

Printed trousers from Primark (£9 and currently available)
I usually make a habit of venturing into a Primark just after I've been paid and causing some damage to my bank account, and I came back with some right gems this time. I managed to pick up this pair of trousers, and let me tell you that they are the most comfortable trousers ever - and I really struggle with finding ones that are! They have an elasticated waist (So they just pull on), slightly tapered ankles and fit quite loose but still fairly close to the leg. They come in a range of colours and patterns (I also picked up a coral pair with silver zips) and I'm definitely going to buy some more next time I'm in Primark!

The Donut Burger from Red's True Barbecue
I've visited Red's several times now, and every time I've looked at the menu I've thought "I've got to try that donut burger one day". Well, that day was Sunday - and oh my gosh, what took me so long?! It's absolutely incredible. The calories will be off the scale, but this burger is worth blowing any diet for. This consists of two steak burgers, melted cheese, smoked peppered bacon and "dirty sauce", crammed between two glazed donuts and topped with deep fried onions. It shouldn't work but it really, really does; it manages to strike the perfect balance between savoury and sweet and I'm salivating just thinking about it.

  1. That burger looks delicious & disgusting at one and the same time....I love sweet & savoury things but I'm not sure I would be able to make myself order it, much less actually eat it.

I love posts like this, the lifestyle-y bits of blogs are some of my favourite posts (in and amongst the rest of the content).
