Our last day is the only day that we made out of of bed at a reasonable time - partly because we had to! We eventually managed to catch the breakfast that they served for hotel guests next door as an Irish pub called Molly Malones. It was quite nice but in all honesty I wasn't sad that we'd missed 2 days of it! We wanted to squeeze in one last museum so off we went on a tram...
The final museum we wanted to see was the Rijksmuseum, which is a Dutch national art museum and is one of the biggest in the country. I really wanted to see Rembrandt's The Night Watch, which is this painting. There's no sense of scale here, but it's absolutely huge - about 14ft tall! It was amazing to see in real life - the detail was incredible, especially for a painting so huge.
This was taken after we'd been in the Rijksmuseum, which you can see in the background. This is (I think) the original and biggest "I amsterdam" sign and is the first one I remember seeing on my last trip to Amsterdam. What you can just see to the right is a giant pool that stretches across the Museumplein.
Again, I insisted on another photo and is another one that I really like! You can't see much of the background but you can get the gist. It was incredibly sunny that day so the sunglasses had to come out for both of us! We weren't expecting such nice weather so it was nice to have it on our last day. If you look really closely at the reflection in Martin's sunglasses you can see my SLR and the giant pool!
It was near impossible to get a shot of either of us next to the sign without several people in the background doing the exact same thing... this is the best out of a bad bunch! Considering the time of year it was surprisingly busy around the sign, but then I guess it always would be. It was great to see the sign again, last time I was there it was snowing and the pool had been turned into an ice rink!
We went to a lot of these during our trip - FEBO! Basically they are takeaways with a difference. Instead of going to the counter to get some food, you could go up to these little windows with a couple of euros in change, pop it in, open the little door and pull out a deep fried snack of your choice! Hideously unhealthy of course but I like to think that we walked it off.
We'd spotted this Ben & Jerry's shop a previous day, so we decided to use up some of our last euros and treat ourselves. I've never seen a Ben & Jerry's shop anywhere else other than Amsterdam, so really it was just a novelty to go in and have some. Despite the face he's pulling Martin was very pleased to be here!
After a bit of uhmming and aahing we decided to go with Baked Alaska. I'm sure most of you know what it is, but for those of you who don't, it's white chocolate ice cream with marshmallow swirls and little white chocolate polar bears... mhmmm yum! We shared a little tub, which was still pretty expensive (over 5 euros if I remember correctly) but like I said, it was all for novelty.
This was taken on our slow walk back to the hotel, on Leidsestraat. This is one of the main streets in the city, lined with shops in both sides and all manners of trams, bikes and other people all fighting for the same space! More than once on our walk up we saw the drivers of the trams having to beep their horn at tourists who decided it'd be a good idea to walk down the middle of the road!
We turned off Leidsestraat and walked along one of the many canals, and took a few photos along the way. I have no idea who the girl is or why there was a statue of her, but it made a nice enough photo so there we are! This was quite a leafy area of the city, with the sun shining it just looked glorious.
This is Dam Square, and by this point we were back towards the northern end of the city. This reminded me a lot of Trafalgar Square in London, as there were hundreds of pigeons and all sorts of people busking, playing real life statues and performing magic tricks. In the picture is the National Monument, which was very tall and difficult to fit into the frame!
One last photo of us before having to put the camera away... awww! The National Monument is just visible in the background and we were sat on some steps that led up to it. If I look knackered that's because I was, we were sad to be going home but our feet were looking forward to some rest at long last!
So there we are... all four days of Amsterdam in photos! After the last photo we picked up our bags from the hotel, caught the train from Central Station back to the airport and waited for our flight home. Our flight ended up being delayed because of scratches to the surface of the plane, which some guy had to come out and paint over (yes, really)! But we made it home at about 8:30pm, back to Yorkshire and back to horrible weather. We were really lucky with the weather in Amsterdam, for one day at least it was too warm to wear our jackets - most days was quite dull and overcast but we lucked out on our last day.
I hope you guys have enjoyed my little Amsterdam series! Like I said at the beginning I do have some videos to put up, but I'll do a post linking to those when I get around to doing them. I'll be back to beauty/fashion blogging for the forseeable future so I'll see you in the next post, which will be a haul!
